Only Two Things in Life Are Constant

Dear Friends,

Papillon Human PotentialHave you ever heard the saying that the only thing that’s constant in life is change?

If you pay attention closely, though, you’ll notice that while all these changing things dance in front of you – dance in front of your awareness – you can get a more permanent sense of yourself that is behind all of that – and that self can be a source of strength.

When people put their sense of self directly in these ‘finite’ objects, they lose the balance of themselves and become turbulent. Or more typically, they remain turbulent.

When we are aware, though, that there is an element or part to us that doesn’t need to be drawn into the over-importance of things, be they even our own minds, bodies, thoughts, relationships, desires, emotions, etc, and is indeed constant to us whatever we do and whatever happens to us, we have a natural basis of strength through wisdom.

The source of wisdom is getting a sense for this second constant that lies behind the flow of change. Some wisdom traditions call this The Witness, as it observes all in front of it as mere objects, or ‘the dance of finite things’, and transcends the Ego’s turbulence.

This then provides the basis for many good things, such as emotional mastery, respectful relationships, and fulfilling self-actualisation, free from the grasping element of the mind.

You can’t witness The Witness, otherwise what part of you would be witnessing that?!, but you can get a sense of the constant quality of consciousness in you that sits behind all of the changing things in life. Recognising and identifying with this constant, rather than exclusively identifying with mere things, provides the basis of stability for your Authentic Self and a fully confident You to then enjoy such things from a position of freedom and power.

From this position of strength, we can then approach the nuances of life without giving our sense of power away to them, and without them gaining control over us.

To read my article further explaining these two dimensions of our constants click here or below.

“I’ve concluded that most people would rather rust or rot than change. Yet few realize that in life, there’s nothing permanent except change. We’re either growing or dying; nothing ever stands still except the still center within us all. Finding that still point allows you to see change as a necessary step of growth.” – Peter Ragnar
